The Marlins have placed 34-year old righty swinging Miguel Olivo on the restricted list, as he left the team without permission. He won’t get paid while he is on the list and he would like the Marlins to release him due to a lack of playing time lately. Olivo has played in 7 games so far in June and he is 3 for 9 (.333 avg, 1.000 OPS) with 1 run scored, 1 homer and 2 RBIs. He has played in 33 games for the Marlins overall this year and he is 15 for 74 (.203 avg, .642 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 4 homers and 9 RBIs. 23-year old lefty Rob Brantly and 30-year old Jeff Mathis have been platooning behind the plate lately for the Marlins, leaving Olivo nailed to the bench. Brantly has played in 42 games for the Marlins so far this year and he is 36 for 147 (.245 avg, .591 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 0 homers and 15 RBIs. Mathis has played in 13 games for the Marlins so far this year and he is 5 for 41 (.122 avg, .422 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 0 homers and 3 RBIs. I can understand Olivo’s complaint about playing time, as he is a better all-around catcher than Brantly or Mathis is right now.
