The Florida Marlins have placed lefty reliever Reynel Pinto on the 15-day disabled list due to left elbow inflammation. Pinto has pitched in 24 games (0 starts) for the Marlins this season and he is 2-0 with a 2.53 ERA and a 1.59 WHIP. If Pinto just had a little bit more control he would be one of the better lefty relievers in the major leagues. Pinto has walked 12 batters in 21 1/3 innings this season for the Marlins.

The Florida Marlins sign a couple of free agent pitchers

The Florida Marlins have signed 29-year old righty reliever/starter Clay Hensley and 32-year old righty reliever Gary Glover to minor league deals. Hensley has had some success at the major league level. He has pitched in 106 games (40 starts) in his major league career and he is 15-18 with a 4.09 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP. But, Gary Glover is just not that good. He has pitched in 263 games (47 starts) in his major league career so far and he is 29-26 with 3 saves, a 5.03 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP. The Marlins will be in trouble if either of these guys pitch for them in 2009.

The Florida Marlins need more from Cameron Maybin

The Marlins have to be disappointed with Cameron Maybin’s production so far this season. Maybin has played in 22 games for the Marlins this season and he is 16 for 74 (.216 avg, .622 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 1 homer, 3 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Maybin has looked overmatched at times this season as he has whiffed 26 times already this season. The Marlins might be forced to stick with Maybin a while longer as they don’t have much behind him. Alfredo Amezaga would probably get the first chance to replace him in CF but he’s not hitting the ball either. Amezaga has played in 17 games for the Marlins this season and he is 10 for 42 (.238 avg, .590 OPS) with 4 runs scored and 4 RBIs.

The Florida Marlins trade Logan Kensing to the Nationals

The Florida Marlins have traded Logan Kensing to the Nationals for righty reliever Kyle Gunderson. Kensing pitched in 6 games (0 starts) for the Marlins this season and he was 0-1 with a 9.82 ERA and a 2.59 WHIP. He finished his career with the Marlins pitching in 110 games (3 starts) in which he was 7-8 with 1 save, a 5.21 ERA and a 1.59 WHIP. 23-year old righty reliever Kyle Gunderson has pitched in 6 games (0 starts) in A-ball this season and he is 2-0 with a 2.16 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP. Last season Gunderson pitched in 40 games (0 starts) in rookie and A-ball in which he was 5-2 with 8 saves, a 2.39 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP. This was a good move for the Marlins who seemed to run out of patience with Kensing.
