The Marlins decided not to tender a contract to 34-year old righty reliever Joe Nelson showing really how cheap they are. Nelson pitched in 59 games (0 starts) for the Marlins last season and he was 3-1 with 1 save, a 2.00 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. He only allowed 42 hits while whiffing 60 batters in 54 innings last season for the Marlins. Nelson has now pitched in 107 games (0 starts) in his major league career and he is 4-2 with 10 saves, a 4.09 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. The Marlins should have kept Nelson and he was quickly snapped up by the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Marlins have released 32-year old righty swinging catcher Matt Treanor. Treanor played in 65 games for the Marlins last season and he was 49 for 206 (.238 avg, .607 OPS) with 18 runs scored, 2 homers and 23 RBIs. Treanor played in 274 games in his career with the Marlins in which he was 171 for 723 (.237 avg, .639 OPS) with 63 runs scored, 8 homers and 70 RBIs. The Marlins won’t miss Treanor as they will likely be able to sign a better player than him as a cheap free agent.
