The Marlins have placed outfielder Brett Carroll on the 15-day disabled list with a separated shoulder and ligament damage after running into a wall last night attempted to catch a ball. He has played in 15 games for the Marlins this season and he is 1 for 16 (.063 avg, .306 OPS) with 1 run scored and 1 RBI. The Marlins have recalled Robert Andino to replace Carroll on the active roster. Andino has played in 21 games this season for the Marlins and he is 4 for 22 (.182 avg, .763 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 2 homers and 3 RBIs. He has also whiffed 14 times already this season.

Kevin Gregg was not a 1-year wonder for the Florida Marlins

One had to wonder if Kevin Gregg was for real or just a flash in the pan but he’s proving this season that he’s the real deal. Gregg has pitched in 22 games (0 starts) for the Marlins this season and he is 3-2 with 9 saves, a 2.31 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. He even looks better than he did last season when he surprised everyone by being a effective closer.

The Florida Marlins sign outfielder Jacque Jones

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Tuesday 20 May 2008 at 6:21 pm

The Marlins have signed 33-year old, lefty swinging outfielder Jacque Jones to a contract for the rest of the season and they have sent him to A-ball Jupiter to shake off the rust as he hasn’t played since May 4th. Jones will likely then bump Alfredo Amezaga to the bench where he belongs. Jones has played in 24 games this season for the Tigers and he was 13 for 79 (.165 avg, .497 OPS) with 10 runs scored, 1 homer and 5 RBIs. But, Jones has had a very solid career and the Marlins believe that he has a lot of gas left in the tank. Jones has played in 1,284 games in his major league career and he is 1,268 for 4,557 (.278 avg, .778 OPS) with 627 runs scored, 165 homers, 628 RBIs and 82 stolen bases. The Marlins signed Jones because they think they can win right now. He will likely platoon with Cody Ross in CF and he will be a huge offensive upgrade over Amezaga.

Cameron Maybin is off to a rough start in the minors for the Florida Marlins

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Wednesday 7 May 2008 at 7:34 pm

21-year old righty swinging Cameron Maybin is supposed to be the main man in the Cabrera/Willis trade in the off season but he’s off to a tough start in AA-Ball. Maybin has played in 30 games in AA-Ball this season and he is 28 for 107 (.262 avg, .841 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 4 homers, 10 RBIs and 6 stolen bases. But, Maybin has whiffed an astounding 42 times in only 107 at bats and that’s no way to get to Miami. It’s early in the season but the Marlins can’t be pleased with the play of Maybin so far this year.

Lefties got it going on in the rotation for the Florida Marlins

Mark Hendrickson and Scott Olsen are both off to fine starts to the 2008 season. Veteran lefty Hendrickson is giving the Marlins quality innings and veteran leadership so far this season. He has started 7 games for the Marlins so far this season and he is 5-1 with a 3.71 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. He’s doing a fine job of mixing up pitches and changing speeds. Scott Olsen had a rough year in 2007 but he’s making up for lost time this year. Olsen has started 6 games for the Marlins this season and he is 3-1 with a 2.70 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP. The Marlins have to be glad that they held onto Olsen as many in the front office wanted to move him in the off season due to his off field issues.

The Florida Marlins place outfielder Josh Willingham on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Saturday 3 May 2008 at 12:23 am

The Marlins have placed starting left fielder Josh Willingham on the 15-day disabled list with a sore lower back. He has played in 25 games this season for the Marlins and he is 31 for 91 (.345 avg, 1.043 OPS) with 16 runs scored, 6 homers and 16 RBIs. Veteran Luis Gonzalez will likely get the bulk of the playing time in left field while Willingham is out. Gonzalez has played in 27 games for the Marlins this season and he is 12 for 56 (.214 avg, .701 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 3 homers and 5 RBIs. The Marlins have recalled Brett Carroll from the minors to replace Willingham on the active roster. Carroll has played in 4 games for the Marlins this season and he is 1 for 8 (.125 avg, .500 OPS) with 1 run scored and 1 RBI.
